Indie folk favorites Mt. Joy have just dropped a gorgeous new intimate song as they get ready to embark on a massive tour that includes tons of festival stops and a big headline show at the Hollywood Bowl this summer.
The Los Angeles-based Philadelphia-bred quintet’s new song is called “Highway Queen” (via their own Bloom Field Records in collaboration with Neon Gold Records), and frontman Matt Quinn has shared the impetus behind the ultra personal song.
“The song is about being in love with someone you see a bit of yourself in,” Quinn is quoted as saying in a press release. “My wife is from Brazil but left home when she was 15 to chase a dream and had success that has kept her away from home and moved her all over the world ever since. Living away from home corrals your demons in a specific way, you feel like the only way to out run them is to keep moving, and it makes being home torturous.
“It’s something I personally struggle with so I know it when I see it in someone else, especially someone I love. Now we share a home together and I hope this song can represent a reminder that we have each other to work through it all and hopefully the rest of our lives to figure it out at whatever pace we need.”
We’ve been massive fans of Mt. Joy since first seeing them play the small stage at Bonnaroo 2017. Their rise has been meteoric and deserved, and last year they delivered a kickass show at the Greek Theatre. They head out on tour in a couple weeks beginning with a festival run that includes Wonderfront Festival in San Diego in May. Then it’s off to Europe for June before returning to the States in July and August.
They’ll headline a KCRW Festival gig at the Hollywood Bowl on August 25. Some tickets remain, you don’t want to miss it! Find Mt. Joy’s entire tour dates here.
