Night two of the Girl School 2018 featured another big surprise after night one saw Karen O and Best Coast make surprise appearances.
Shirley Manson and the Girl School Choir (which featured many of the festival’s performers as backup singers) and an orchestra of sorts brought out Fiona Apple to cap the night with a cover of “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore. Watch the footage below:
Apple was wearing a white T-shirt with “KNEEL PORTNOW” written in ink across it, in response to The Recording Academy president Neil Portnow’s statement that women need to step up in order to start winning more GRAMMYs.
Manson, the lead singer of iconic 90s band Garbage, mentioned how when she was on tour she picked up a copy of Apple’s masterful debut record Tidal without knowing anything about the singer and ended up listening to it every night on that tour on her discman. The two joined forces in what was a massive surprise for those attending the third-annual female-driven and produced festival.
Manson’s set also featured orchestral arrangements of old Garbage classics like “I’m Only Happy When It Rains”.
Girl School 2018 continues tomorrow night with sets from Lauren Ruth Ward and Soccer Mommy among others. Tickets are still available.
