A few months after Goldenvoice brings a rap-heavy festival to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, they’ll be bringing an R&B-leaning festival to the same location. The Smokin Grooves 2018 lineup dropped today and it’s full of today’s top names in the genre.
Taking place on Saturday, June 16, the festival is headlined by alt-R&B icon Erykah Badu, as well as Los Angeles’ own Miguel, and Jhene Aiko. Also appearing on the bill is a rare performance from Anderson Paak side project NxWorries with producer Knxwledge. The Roots are billed with Busta Rhymes in what promises to be an awesome set. H.E.R., Majid Jordan, DVSN, Alina Baraz, Thundercat, Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def), and Soulection are some of the other names featured.
Smokin Grooves has meaning in the hip-hop community as it was a prominent tour in the mid-90’s that came at a time when rap and hip-hop was largely under fire. It was created as hip-hop’s answer to Lollapalooza and the first edition in 1996 booked acts like Nas, The Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, and other acts that were the polar opposite of gangster rap.
