The FYF Fest 2018 lineup is out!
Headlining this year’s festival are Janet Jackson and Florence + The Machine. Sub-headline acts include Future, The xx, My Bloody Valentine, and St. Vincent. On April 2, the festival added Nicolas Jaar side project Against All Logic to the bill — his only North American performance under that name scheduled for 2018 at this time.
FYF Fest 2018 will be reduced from three days to two, as the video also confirmed this year’s dates as Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22. This can likely be due to the fact the festival had to play catchup on the booking process when they dealt with some issues to end last year.
Also on this year’s bill are Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Internet, Kali Uchis, Car Seat Headrest, Skepta, Rhye, and many more. Of the 45 names listed on the bill, 21 acts are female-fronted or feature women prominently, for a solid 46 percent inclusion rate. The festival is also topped by two women in two different genres, which is pretty great.
There was turmoil regarding the festival taking place this year when FYF Fest founder Sean Carlson was alleged to have engaged in multiple instances of sexual misconduct, as reported by SPIN last November. Festival partner Goldenvoice parent company AEG bought out Carlson’s 50 percent stake in FYF Fest, confirming that the festival would take place. Goldenvoice’s Jennifer Yacoubian (who books the Shrine venue, as well as Splash House festivals) took over the booking, with assistance from FYF Fest co-producer Dave Peterson.
“FYF has been a Los Angeles staple for the past 15 years (happy anniversary to us!), and a very special event with a diverse booking that is unique to the festival,” said FYF/Goldenvoice booker Jennifer Yacoubian in a press release. “In the past 15 years, this festival has grown immensely with a strong team of women and men behind it to bring fans the best weekend of summer. And with incredible artists like Janet Jackson and Florence + The Machine topping this year’s bill, we are so psyched to have two badass women leading the roster as we head into FYF Fest 2018.”
FYF Fest was known for delivering incredible bookings that were more indie than the mainstream juggernaut that Coachella has become in recent years. They went from two to three days in 2016, and last year featured Frank Ocean, Missy Elliott, Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop, and A Tribe Called Quest as the top-billed names.
