Canadian lo-fi rockers Alvvays are back with a new song, the third to come from their highly anticipated sophomore record. The song “Plimsoll Punks” is a treat, make sure you grab Antisocialites when it drops September 8 on Polyvinyl.
I can’t think of a better power pop band out there right now. It feels like it has been ages since they dropped their self-titled debut in 2014, but it’s proving very much worth the wait. I first heard some of these new songs at their Fortress Fest performance a few months back, and the studio versions have yet to disappoint.
The latest — “Plimsoll Punks” — is another song that builds on what made them a breakout band a few years ago. The soundscapes have more layers and edge and an equally catchy hook. “Getting me down, getting me down, you’re getting me down,” singer Molly Rankin sings, and the song features quite the breakdown before the final chorus. Give it a listen below.
Alvvays has a tour coming up, but if you want to see them anywhere near Los Angeles, your only bet as now is at the Long Beach festival Music Tastes Good. They should be an excellent fit for that lineup and we really enjoyed ourselves there last year.
