Australian singer-songwriter Tash Sultana is the latest in a line of musicians to make a mark after recording a hit song in her bedroom. Earlier this week, the singer took to Triple J’s exhilarating series Like a Version to offer a killer cover of MGMT’s “Electric Feel” that breathes new life into the classic summer jam.
A one-woman band with a bevvy of pedals, Sultana lays down a killer guitar loop, utilizes dual vocals and even a drum pad to bring a different take to the song. Her adeptness at working the looping pedals and jamming out reminds me of Joseph Arthur, who I consider the absolute best at these one-person gigs. Take a listen below:
Tash Sultana will be dropping her debut EP Notion on Friday, February 17 via Mom + Pop Records. She started out busking in the streets of her native Melbourne before recording the hit “Jungle” in her bedroom (now over one-million plays on YouTube). You can see her excellent performance of that song on Triple J here as well. She’s embarking on a sold-out nine-date run in the U.S. — her first headlining run in the States — which includes a date at The Echo on Tuesday, February 21. As you can see from the performance above, she’s not to be missed. If you can find a ticket on the secondary market, we recommend checking her out.
