Romy brought a massive dance party to LA’s El Rey this past weekend, complete with DJs and a flurry of fun. The floor was packed as the DJs of the Club Mid Air tour got the crowd grooving, moving, and warmed up. A couple songs after Romy took the stage, the audience broke out into a cheer, chanting ‘Romy! Romy! Romy!’ unanimously, reflecting the sense of awe, love, togetherness, happiness, sadness, melancholia, and joy that Romy so carefully, thoughtfully and thoroughly curates.
One of the founding members of the xx, Romy has stepped out on her own and the results have been fantastic. She’s been touring in support of her debut full-length record Mid Air that dropped back in September. It’s good to see her keeping busy as the xx hasn’t released an album since 2017’s I See You — an album they toured relentlessly.
Being among Romy’s first several shows with this music, it was wonderful to see her excitement and reactions to the crowd singing along attentively. The crowd was bouncing and cheering for Romy all night long, and when the night came to a close, everyone in the audience walked out feeling fulfilled and a little more understood than they did when they walked in.
